Electrical Engineering/one-minute timer

Question
My nephew is to make a one-minute timer using household materials.  Any suggestions you can give would be greatly appreciated.

           Thank you,

           Aunt Sue

Answer
How about taking a cone-shaped paper cup (the kind from some office water coolers)and cut a small hole in the bottom tip. Suspend it over a cup. Fill it with fine play sand and time how long it takes to run out. Draw a line at the level of sand needed to last one minute.

Hope this helps!
