Electrical Wiring in the Home - changing old alluminium wire to copper for insurance and safty purposes

Expert: David Coil/C. R. Construction - 1/6/2008

Question
HI,
my house is about 35 years old and back than all wiring around the house was alluminum wirings which is unsafe.  all house wirings are now with copper wiring,  because of hte safty, the home insurance wants us to chang all sockets and plugs to copper style which is very expensive.  I was told that i can open a socket or plug and all copper wire to the old wire with copper mereths also put some kind of paste and than it's safer than before and the insurance company would not raise their premium.  Is that true and if so, where to i see or read about it so i can do the change myself

Answer
There is nothing unsafe about aluminum wire.  It is still being used in higher amperage situations.  As for your recepticles and switches...you would need an expensive appliance rated Al/Cu.  Nolux is a grease that would be added to the wire to prevent oxidation from the two elements.
