Electrical Wiring in the Home - wiring light /garbage disposal double switch

Expert: Bill Lutz - 12/1/2008

Question
Hi my name is Mike and I'm having problems connecting a double switch to a light and garbage disposal. I have two wires, one black and white that are powered, but i want to put a double switch to work both. its a regular switch so its not a GFCI. can you please help me? i was hoping maybe you can send me a picture of a diagram to make things easier. Thank you

Answer
Here is the best diagram that I could find for you. (disregard the wire color. They will not make sense in your application.) Basically  you hot wire goes on to one side of the switch. Inside the switch it is split into two feeds. On the other sire of the switch you have the top screw going to one device (light) and the bottom going to the other (Garbage disposer). The hot side of the switch is usually on the left and the switched side on the right. This may not be true with every brand.
