Electrical Wiring in the Home - Small outlet spark

Expert: Dale - 3/25/2008

Question
Hi,

In one of the bedrooms of my house, the outlets give a tiny spark whenever I plug in my computer or TV, though both units are turned off.  Both outlets function normally however, with no problems.  Is this anything I should worry about?

Thanks for your time,

John

Answer
Hi John,

Sorry I have taken so long to answer, I am in the middle of all the flooding.

If the sparks are coming from the front by the prongs is is probably just from plugging them in, even though they are turned off there are still electronic parts in them that draw power. If the sparks are from behind the plate you could have a loose connection on the receptacle that needs tightened.
