Question
Good morning Bob,
I am trying to wire an outdoor light pole so I'm thinking that I can tap off from the outlet in the interior wall.  So I'm looking for a diagram or instructions on how to wire from a outlet to a switch then to the outdoor light pole which is the end of the source.  so I currently have an outlet in a wall and I want to add a switch to turn the light pole on and off and like I mentioned its at the end of the source.  I hope this all makes sense.  I appreciate any help you may give.  Thanks.

Answer
Jim,

Tapping into the existing outlet may prove challenging especially if there are already two cables in it so what I'm suggesting is possibly tapping into something a little easier in the basement area like your main panel or a junction box you know has a steady (not switched) power supply in it then drilling up into any wall space to get to your new wall switch. Once in the basement you should easily get outside to where the pole will be. As far as connections go what ever you tap into you will connect white to white and black to black, bare ground to bare ground if you have Romex (plastic) if you don't then you will just connect the bare ground to the box VIA ground screw. Going up to the switch you will have two cables in it, one from the power point you tapped into and the other going to the light pole. You will splice white to white, bare ground to bare ground and a pig tail coming off that splice to the switch if your using a plastic box (which I recomend), then finally the remaining two blacks will connect to the two terminals on the switch. At the pole its pretty simple , white to white, black to black, bare ground to bare ground if there is a bare ground to connect to, otherwise you would connect the bare ground to the metal of the junction box the pole light attaches to.

Bob
