Electrical Wiring in the Home - replacing 3 gang switch.

Expert: PASCACK VALLEY ELECTRIC Bob Mossman - 5/11/2008

Question
Hi Bob.  My in laws have a modular home and they have a set of 3 switches in the bathroom.  The switches are NOT mounted in a box but are sort of self contained with the wires running directly into the back of the switches.  I was going to replace them with a simple sheet rock box but discovered that the wall is simply too narrow and the box will not go in deeply enough. It protrudes about 1" and there is no way to make it go in deeper without knocking a hole in the other side.

It was suggested that i use a wire mold and I purchased one only to discover that with the sizeable hole already there is no way to mount it so that it will cover the existing hole.  I need a shallow sheet rock box but no such thing appears to exist.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer
Chris,

I don't know how big the opening is that you have there but you mentioned 3 switches which would be a "3 gang" set up and a sizable hole to cover. In this case you would need a 3 gang wire mold "adapter" box and it should cover that opening but I doubt Home Depot or Lowes would have such an item but they could probably special order it for you.

Bob
