Subject: Black out in 2 rooms with breaker working

Question
QUESTION: Over the winter we were burning a heater that kept tripping our 15amp breaker until finally the power in 2 rooms would not come on any more. The breaker is still working and giving power to other rooms but in 2 rooms the ourlets are no longer working. There is some power indicated from the socket when I insert a power tester the light comes on. But not enough power any unit I plug in.
Could there be a wire burnout somewhere in the wall? If so how do I find and fix it. Thanks Much.

ANSWER: YOu will need to pull out all recepticle in that circuit and test each branch.  Testing continuity first is a good idea..but power in and thru will work.

QUESTION: I'm not clear on what you mean by "Test each branch"
and "Power in and thru" please give me just a little more clarity. Thanks much for answering.

ANSWER: Sorry, sometimes I do get too short with descriptions.  YOu would need to take out each receptilce...disconnect them and check for voltage from the breaker to each point.  YOu need to be sure you have a clean circuit.  120volts in each box.  At some point, you will either have a box with NO power...or you will find the location of undervoltage.  Then it is an easyfix.

QUESTION: Great! one final question on this, When i find the low or no power outlet box, to fix it do I replace the wiring from the box to the breaker? or is there something else I must do? Thanks very much.

Answer
If you find a box with no power...you will need to address the last box that has power and try to find where the wires from that box go.  YOu may run into a situation where you have a junction box...unknown location yet...that has a broken wire...or other separation.  It may take a trip into the attic..and do a random chase of all the wires to see if a junction box is visible...or reachable to inspect.
