Electrical Wiring in the Home - Not enough voltage

Expert: Dale - 7/26/2008

Question
All the outlets on one circuit in my home are testing 120 until something is plugged into one of them. Then they all drop down to around 70-73.

Answer
Hi Michelle,
It sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere in the circuit. I would turn off the breaker and determine everything on that circuit, then turn it back on and plug a light or something in that drops the voltage down. Test the voltage on all the receptacles until you get a normal reading, the problem will likely be in that receptacle or the first one that gives you a low reading, if they all give you the same reading, check the connections in your circuit breaker box.
Good luck,
Dale
