Electrical Wiring in the Home - Re-Wiring Table saw for 220

Expert: J Cook - 9/17/2008

Question
I have a Sears 10" table saw that is wired for 110 volt operation, but the motor can be re-wired for 220.  I was told that you could order a new 220 power cord from Sears for this prupose and then just change the wiring over in the motor.  The new paddle switch is 110 just like the one that came with the saw.  It says to convert to 220 that the cord from the wall has to be replaced.  It is 14Ga. three wire with lugs on the ends in the switch.  The plug is a standard 3-prong grounded plug.  My 220 outlet has holes that look like they match, except that one of the flat prongs in turned sideways.  Where can I get a replacement cord with that type of plug?

Answer
The receptacle you describe sounds like a 20 amp 120 volt receptacle. You need to verify the voltage on this receptacle with a meter by checking into both slots and see what the voltage is before rewiring the motor. Let me know what the reading is. Thanks J
