Electrical Wiring in the Home - popping noise and a rubbery burning smell

Expert: J Cook - 1/8/2009

Question
Hi J,

I was in the shower this morning, and I heard a loud popping noise. When I got out and was getting ready in the adjoining bedroom, both my husband and I could smell a rubbery kind of burning wire smell around the closet/bathroom area. The smell went away shortly, but I am worried. My husband investigated the all the breakers. He did find a breaker thrown from the air conditioning unit outside, but we aren't sure how long it has been like that since it is winter. Could that be it, or could it be something else?

Also, I should mention I did hear a similar popping noise one other time in the shower, when the outer white layer of a vanity light bulb busted, and the light bulb burnt out. Could this be related to the problem?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Answer
I would be concerned but I am not sure where to tell you to begin looking. Since you heard the sound near the bathroom, I would start there and probably with the vanity light. I would turn off the breaker to this light and remove it and check the wiring connections to it. With the circuit wires loose to it, I would use a volt meter, turn the power back on and check the actual voltage to the light. You may have a wire somewhere making contact with another hot wire and getting high voltage to this light or another device in either the bath or bedroom area, but it is a concern I would investigate even if I had to pull out every switch and receptacle in these two areas first and check the connections.
Thanks J
