Electrical Wiring in the Home/12X3 wiring

Question
I am replacing a ceiling fan that had 12X3 wiring from the switch. I am installing four recessed lighting cans and am using 12X2 to connect the cans. Can I still use the 12X3 from the switch and how do I connect that feed to the first can?
Thank you

Answer
Hi.

If you don't need the red wire, then cap it at both ends.

However, it depends on why there is a red wire.  If there is one switch, and the circuit continues, then you need to leave the black wire alone and connect the new lights to the red wire, otherwise the lights will not turn off.

I hope this helps.
