Question Hello, I am working in a older house that only runs off of a hot wire and a neutral wire, no ground wire. My question is, would you know immediately (breaker tripping or other problem) if you have the neutral and hot wires reversed? Thank you for your time.
Answer Hi.
No, if the hot and neutral wires are reversed, it would be safety hazard, since a device would get power while it was off, since the neutral would be switched. It would not trip a breaker however.
There are testers that plug in which can tell you if the wires are reversed. All home centers sell them, and they are not expensive.
I hope this helps.
Bob
