Electrical Wiring in the Home - Changing a light fixture with spliced K & T wiring

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/2/2009

Question
We are trying to change out a light fixture that has K & T wiring but also has newer wiring.  There is one hole from the ceiling that has only one K&T wire coming out, then another hole with the other K&T plus newer wires (bl & wh).  We have tried as many possibilities as we can come up with on how to wire the new light fixture (of course, one bl, one wh and one ground) to the house.  How do you do this??  We either have had no power to the light, or turn the breaker back on and the light automatically comes on (while the switch is turned to the off position), and when you flip the switch to the on position it blows the breaker.  Thank you!

Answer
Hi.

You may need to find where the wires go to.  However, it sounds like there is a switch loop.

The power in (black) would go to one wire going to the switch, the wire returning from the switch would connect to the black fixture wire.  The white power in wire would connect to the white fixture wire.  Both wires going to the switch loop are hot, so it does not matter what color.  Of course, with K %26 T, you don't have color coding, so you have to do the best you can.

I hope this helps.

Bob
