Electrical Wiring in the Home - ELECTRIC DRYER

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/10/2009

Question
I HAVE EN ELECTRIC DRYER THAT WAS MOVED FROM ONE END OF THE HOUSE TO THE OTHER. IT WORKED IN IT'S ORIGINAL LOCATION. IT WAS REWIRED ABOUT 25 FT AWAY WITH 12 GAUGE WIRE. IT WILL NOT HEAT UP. DID THEY USE THE WRONG WIRE, AND COULD THAT CAUSE THE COILS NOT TO HEAT? PLENTY OF FLOW AND EVERYTHING ELSE WORKS FINE.  THANK YOU

Answer
Do not use your dryer until it is wired correctly.

Connecting a dryer with 12 gauge wire can cause a fire.

You need at least 10/3 wire. At the old end, connect the wires black to black, red to red, white to white and ground to ground.  At the dryer end, follow the instructions with the outlet.  Usually black and red on the sides, bare wire on the green screw and white wire on the center screw.

I hope this helps.

Bob
