Electrical Wiring in the Home - First flip of switch doesn't work

Expert: Kevin L. Ogle - 11/1/2009

Question
Yesterday morning we went to flip on the light in the kitchen.  Flipped the switch several times and nothing happened.  There are 2 switches that control the light.  Walked over and flipped the other switch, it worked.  Then the orginal switch worked fine too.  This morning went to flip on the light in the hallway by the kitchen and nothing happened.  Flipped it back up and the light came on (this light also has two switches that control it).  Seems to be working fine again now but any clue what's up?  Could this be dangerous?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Amanda,
It sounds like you have a wire coming loose or maybe more likely, a switch going bad. I suggest that you replace both switches that control the light. If that doesn't work, replace the socket that holds the light (all of these can be purchased at a hardware store). If you have a breaker system in your house, I doubt it is dangerous, but it still is not good and needs to be addressed.
