Expert: Ben - 11/10/2009
Question I have a portable generator and have been told it can be wired directly to the breaker box. I understand this is something I need an electrician to but was told it was a fairly simple process, so I was a little surprised when the first estimate I received was for $800. Is this a fairly simple task for an electrician and what would be an acceptable estimate range?
Thanks
Jim
Answer Jim
You can not wire it to the breaker box with out the generator hooked up to some sort of transfer switch,it is dangerous. You will need to have the person who gave you the estimate explain what they are going to do. If they say they have to install some type of transfer switch then this price is fair as transfer switches alone range anywhere from $150.00 to $1,000.00.Also each area of the USA has different price ranges. This may cost $800.00 in say NY but if in another are may be less,it depends what the laws are some have to pull permits, have their own insurance, trucks, men, etc etc.
