Electrical Wiring in the Home - Loss of Power to Ceiling Lights

Expert: Benny - 11/9/2009

Question
I recently removed my kitchen lights. The ceiling remained lightless for a week or so while I painted the ceiling. When I went to replace the lights--my new lights are actually older lights--nothing worked. I tried the old lights, which worked before, and still nothing worked. I'm getting no power to a source that had power. Is it coincidence that power failed while there were no lights hung?

Answer
Hi Ryan,

I have a feeling something was not connected back the same way.  Maybe a wire was pushed out of the way to make painting easier or painted over and the wire is not making good contact.

Check the voltage at the switch to make sure the power is there and also passing through the switch when turned on.

I hope this has helped.  If you need additional information please send me a follow-up question.

Thanks and have a nice day,

Benny
