Question Hi---Several years ago I had ceiling fans installed in all my bedrooms. The electrician put in single duplex switches, the easiest, cheapest way to do it. I have replaced all of them with double toggle switches; however, I am unable to do this in one bedroom because there is a linen closet on the other side and the studs are too close together to fit a double switch. My question is, is it OK code-wise to install 2 single toggles, one above the other a few inches apart, to operate the light and fan? Would this look odd? Should I just stick with the single duplex switch? Thank you for any information.
Answer Hi.
As long as all the connections are made in the boxes, and the wires between the boxes are the proper type (NM-B, etc) then it is OK to put the boxes on top of each other.
Yes, it may look funny, since they will be at different heights.
I hope this helps.
Bob
