Electrical Wiring in the Home - Size &t ype

Question
I have a new detached garage 150 ft from main box. I want 220& 110 underground (no conduit)type wire. I want run a small 220 air compressor and  110 power tools. What size wire & type?

Answer
What you need to know is how many amps you plan on using. Add up your lighting, your air compressor, and at least two 20 amp circuits for power tools. Then think about what you might like to add in the future, such as heating, cooling, welder, etc.

You need to install a subpanel to distribute the circuits. The ground and neutral do not get bonded at the subpanel.

If you are not using conduit you will want underground direct burial wire. You will want to go up one size for the rating of the amps you want.

For example; if you go with a 50 amp subpanel you will want to run #4 copper, if you go with a 30 amp subpanel you will want #8 copper.
