Electrical Wiring in the Home - WALL SWITCH DIMMER WITH CEILING FAN

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/4/2009

Question
Hello Bob, I have a single pole wall switch in my kitchen controling my CEILING FAN WITH LIGHT. I wanted to change the switch to a dimmer. But as I was considering it, I thought that, reducing the power to the lights, won't that also reduce the power to the fan when I have it on? I now just flip the wall switch on to turn the lights on and than pull the chain on the fixture to turn on the fan and control the speed. Coming into the switch are 2 black wires on the bottom screw, and 1 red cloth wire on the top screw. {Wiring to switch is old.} No ground. Inside the box I can see the white wires twisted and nutted together, but nothing coming to the switch. Or maybe the best and easiest way is to put a dimming remote control in the fan!!!!

Answer
Hi.

You can't have a motor on a dimmer.

Check the wiring in the box of the fan.  If the red wire goes to the fan and you have 2 black wires connected to each other, then you can connect the fan light to the red wire for the switch, and the fan to the black wires.  It will get power all the time, but you can use the pull chain.

You can also buy a remote control wall switch.  It is either a wall mounted switch, or like a TV remote.  Then the fan and light will be controlled separately.

I hope this helps.

Bob
