Question QUESTION: I am about to add a new circuit and install 4 outlets on my back porch. I would like to have one complete outlet always hot to plug in a TV and cable box. The other three outlets I want to be switched so I can add some atmosphere lighting and be able to turn them on and off without affecting the TV.
Can this be done and if so, how should I wire it?
Thank you so much for the help!
Wayne
ANSWER: Hi.
Yes, you can do it. To give you the exact way to wire it, I would need to know the exact relative positions of the switch, outlets, and power source. Normally you would need 3 conductor wire plus ground, and connect the ones you want all the time to the black wires and the ones on the switch on the red wires. White would connect to all of them.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask a follow up question.

QUESTION: Thanks for the answer. I want to go from breaker box to a live outlet to the switch and then to the three switched outlets. Does that give you enough info?
Answer Hi.
That is easy, and you don't need 3 conductor wire.
At the first outlet, all the blacks to the brass terminals and the white to the silver terminals. At the switch, the blacks to the switch terminals, the white to each other. At all the other outlets, blacks to brass, whites to silver. In all cases, bare ground wires to each other, any metal boxes, and green screws.
I hope this helps.
