Electrical Wiring in the Home - Wiring outlets on backporch

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/6/2009

Question
I am about to add a new circuit and install 4 outlets on my back porch.  I would like to have one complete outlet always hot to plug in a TV and cable box.  The other three outlets I want to be switched so I can add some atmosphere lighting and be able to turn them on and off without affecting the TV.

Can this be done and if so, how should I wire it?

Thank you so much for the help!

Wayne

Answer
Hi.

Yes, you can do it.  To give you the exact way to wire it, I would need to know the exact relative positions of the switch, outlets, and power source.  Normally you would need 3 conductor wire plus ground, and connect the ones you want all the time to the black wires and the ones on the switch on the red wires.  White would connect to all of them.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask a follow up question.

Bob
