Electrical Wiring in the Home - blown lightbulbs

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/3/2009

Question
i have 6 4" recessed lights over the work area in the kitchen on a dimmer switch.  also on the circuit is the refridgerator.  i continue to blow bulbs at a rate of 1 every 3 weeks, but the breaker has never tripped.  is it the refridgerator that needs to be taken off the circuit to correct the problem?
thank you

Answer
Hi.

Lighting should not be on the same circuit as kitchen outlets.  However, this would not cause the bulbs to blow.  Bulbs blow either by over voltage, vibration or heat.  Also, halogen bulbs will burn out quick if they are touched by hands, so if they are halogen, you should use a tissue.

Check the bulbs on another socket, and see if they are dimmer there.  If so, they are accidently wired at 220 volts.  If they are low voltage, perhaps the transformer is bad.

I hope this helps.

Bob
