Electrical Wiring in the Home - full panel

Expert: Ben - 11/2/2009

Question
My 200 Ge Panel is full and will not accept 1/2 inch breakers or 1 inch double pole breakers...I need to add a 20 amp and 30 amp 240 breaker for a new AC ...If I put the breakers on the main panel, I will then have 4 20 amp 120 circuits with no space...If I install a sub panel for the 120 circuits and feed it with a 60 amp 240 breaker, I will then have 6 circuits to move to the subpanel....My question is...can I move the hot wires over to the subpanel, and leave the neutrals/grounds as they are in the main?

Answer
Lee
what you can do is add a sub-panel you need to make sure the sub panel has the 2 hots a neutral and a ground. Keep the ground and neutral separate by not using the bonding screw. You will have to bring the circuits over to the sub panel using all the wires for that circuit you can not leave the neutral in the old panel.
