Electrical Wiring in the Home - gfci switch/outlet combination

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/8/2009

Question
Hi
I would like to know how to wire a gfci switch/outlet combination. I recently had a pool installed and would like to place the unit in a weatherproof box outside. The combination unit has the two black lines coming off of it and the instructions that came with the unit are vague. There is one feed coming directly from the panel box with 12-2 wire. I want the switch to control the outlet so I can plug the pool pump into this outlet and operate the pump via the switch. There are no other wires feeding anything else.

Thanks,
Nick

Answer
Hi.

First of all, you have to figure out which wires/terminals are for the switch, and which ones for the outlet.  The black power coming in will connect to the switch wire.  The other switch wire will go to the black wire or brass terminal for the line side.  The white wire coming in will go to the white wire or silver terminal.

I hope this helps.

Bob
