Electrical Wiring in the Home - home electrical problem

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/10/2009

Question
Here's my problem: After my house was vandalized, there was a damaged outlet in the living room resulting from a television cable being ripped violently from the wall. I tried replacing the outlet, but the outlet itself (without anything plugged into it) kicked out the breaker on that circuit. So I put wire caps on the exposed wires and left the outlet alone. I found that many more outlets around the house no longer worked (1 out of 2 in dining rm, all outlets in living rm, 1 out of 2 in small bedroom, and 2 out of 3 in master bedroom). I have been running extensions cords around the house from the working outlets to keep the usual electrical devices working. The one outlet in the dining room supports the refrigerator in the kitchen and the tv/dvd player/cable box in the living room. Also, several switiches no longer get power - the ceiling fan in the master bedroom and the ceiling fan/front porch switch in the living room. Only one outlet works in the basement. Please advise. Thanks.

Answer
Hi.

There is another problem besides the living room outlet.  It sounds like half of the electricity is off.  This would be caused from the main panel to the street.  Also, it is not safe to leave things capped off if there is damage in the system.

Do you have homeowners insurance that will cover and electrician coming in making the repairs?  It sounds like there was a lot of damage and a professional is needed.

I hope this helps.

Bob
