Electrical Wiring in the Home - receptacles have power but won't "work"

Hi Bob,

we have installed 3 new receptacles in our basement. When we check the receptacles with a tester it indicates that there is power coming to each of them, but when we plug a lamp into them none of them will work. What could i be doing wrong?

Hi.

Funny readings like that are usually caused by a disconnected neutral wire. The reading you getting is feedback from the hot wire. Check the white wire from the power source to the first outlet that is not working.
