Electrical Wiring in the Home - removing a dimmer switch on a circuit with 3 switches for 3 lights

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/9/2009

Question
I replaced a bathroom fixture and removed the dimmer on the light switch.  Problem is I can't get the new switch wired correctly.  There are two switches in the same panel, for the bathroom and hall light.  On the other side of the wall a bedroom light is also connected to the same wiring.  The bathroom light will turn on but the hall and the bedroom will not.  There are only 4 wires, all black.  The only live wire seems to be attached to the bathroom switch.  How do I figure out how to wire it correctly when the wires are all black?
Please help!

Answer
Hi.

If the only live wire is connected to the bathroom, that is why it is the only thing working. It has to also connect to the other two switches.

Could the white wires be connected together and pushed behind the switches?

The power in wire needs to connect to one terminal of each switch, and then continue to the bedroom switch.  The black wires for the hall and bathroom lights connect to the other terminal of each switch.  There should be white wires, and all of them just connect together.  If the white wires got pushed back, they may have come loose, so you should look in the back of the switches, and make sure they are all connected under the wire nut.  Also be sure that no wires are pinched or broken.

I hope this helps.

Bob
