Electrical Wiring in the Home - room lights and plugs went out

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/6/2009

Question
I plugged in a portable heater in my master bedroom and also had the iron on at the same time, as a result, I lost power to all of the bedrooms (4) in my home.  But the 3 bathrooms all had the lights working.  Also, the living area, and kitchen, garage and utility room, shed and outside lights all had power.  I reset the internal outlets in the master bedroom, garage and kitchen where the lights were working and I turned off the circuit breakers that were affected, and turned on and off the main power to the house and to now avail.  What is my problem?

Answer
Hi.

The heater and iron can't be used at the same time.  You probably burned a wire loose somewhere on the circuit. These things can be hard to track down.  Somewhere in the circuit, there is a break.  It could even be at a device that is working, because it could be the wire leaving the working device that is not working.

Check all outlets, switches, and lights.  Check the wire nuts, because the wire could look connected, but not be.  Especially check any outlets and switches that have the wires pushed in the back rather than screwed to the sides, because sometimes these fail. You may want to get a circuit analyzer for under $10 at any home center which will narrow it down to the white or black wire.

I hope this helps.

Bob
