Electrical Wiring in the Home - switch for blower

Expert: Greg Hughes - 11/7/2009

Question
Im replacing a dimmer switch for wood stove the old switch has a blk and white wires the new has 2 blks and a ground why are they diffent and how do u hook the switch up

Answer
They are different because they were made at different times, perhaps from a different company, both wires are hot so it makes sense that they are black, and it is easier for them to stock the same color wire than two.

Read the instructions that came with the dimmer. Unless it specifically states otherwise, your switch does not care which wire gets the hot coming in and the hot going out.
