Electrical Wiring in the Home - wire gauge size to amperage

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/9/2009

Question
I know that a 14 gauge wire is 15 amps
12 gauge =20 amps  10gauge=30 amps
is the 8gauge=40 amps and6 gauge=50 amps?

Answer
Hi.

It's not quite that simple.  It depends on the type of wire and the conductor and the length.  If it is not too long, and it is copper, then 8 gauge can be 50 amps and 6 could be 65 amps. Retailers usually have ampacity charts based on length for each item they sell.

I hope this helps.

Bob
