Electrical Wiring in the Home - wiring for range hoods

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 11/5/2009

Question
We are first time homeowners and have pretty much had to rebuild our kitchen.  My husband and I have never done this stuff before and would appreciate some advice.  So we are putting up a ventless range hood and are not sure how to get the wiring for it.  There never was one before so we are doing this on a fresh wall.  please let me know if you the answers or can point us in the right direction.

Thank you

Answer
Hi.

Theoretically, it should not be on the same circuit as the kitchen and dining room outlets.  Living room outlets are fine, and kitchen light circuit is fine.  Usually you put a cable clamp in the hole, and make the connections inside the hood where the motor is. So, you run the other end to a place that has power coming into it. (A switch with only 2 wires in one cable is not a power source since there is no neutral.)

I hope this helps.  Feel free to ask any follow up questions.  It might not be a bad idea to get a basic wiring book at a home center and read it.

Bob
