Electrical Wiring in the Home - Ceiling Fan

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 6/30/2009

Question
I recently removed a ceiling fan that was working fine from the dining room to replace it with a different one & installed the ceiling fan I removed from the dining room in a bedroom where the was an overhead light.  2 days later I came home & had no electricity in this bedroom.  I checked the breaker & it had tripped.  I could not get it to reset. Since I had no problems before I had the ceiling fan installed I figured it was the fan & had the ceiling fan removed & reinstalled the original light fixture. There has not been a problem since. I find it scary that the fan was tripping the breaker while it was off.  No one was there in the home running it, it just kept tripping the breaker.  Any suggestions as to why this would happen?

Answer
Hi.

You might have had a wire in the box touching something it shouldn't have.  When you took the fan down, that wire may have moved.  You can go back and look and see if there are any black marks anywhere.  The fan shouldn't trip the breaker while it is off, but strange things do happen.

I hope this helps.

Bob
