Electrical Wiring in the Home - New light bar

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 6/30/2009

Question
I am remodeling the bathroom. i am planning on removing the light bar (8 bulbs) and install two separate bars (3 bulbs) each.  Currently the junction box in in the center and controlled by 1 switch.
I will keep this 1 switch with the new lights.
What do i need to do this split? Shall I move the box out of center? or split from the center to the areas I would like it at and install 2 new boxes? What is the best wire to use?

Answer
Hi.

If you split from the existing box, you have to keep the box there, and you can't cover it up with Sheetrock.  So, it is best to move it to one side if you can and then run a wire to the other box.  If you have a 20 amp breaker then you need 12/2 Romex. If you have a 15 amp breaker, then you can use 14/2 Romex.

I hope this helps.

Bob
