Electrical Wiring in the Home - length and size of wire

Expert: Benny - 6/30/2009

Question
I want to run electricity to my garage which is about 130 feet away from the panel. I just need 110 not 220 to run some small shop tools and lights. the biggest shop tools are a table saw or a 12 inch planer. they will not be used at the same time. I am planning on about 8 plugs and maybe 8 lights. What size of wire do I need to run from the panel. PS I was planning on running 3 wires from the panel to the garage. 1 for lights and the other for the plugs. I would be using 3 breakers in my panel in the house.

Answer
Hi Brian,

This depends on the load to be served.

I need the table saw and the planer information to determine this.  Look on the "Name plate" which should be attached to the equipment.  It will tell you either the watts, amps and/or the horsepower.

Please send me this information in a follow-up question and I will be glad to help you with this.

Thanks and have a nice day,

Benny
