Electrical Wiring in the Home - 3-way switch

Expert: Ben - 7/3/2009

Question
I also have a 3-way switch that acts as a master switch, when in the off position, the second switch wont work! there are 3 other set ups like this around my house, obviously the original wiring? should a 3-way switch not turn light on/off from either one? the hall switches have been replaced. twice!
have been pulling my hair out trying to fallow many diagrams. the "master switch" or switch #1 has a 14/2(power in) and a 14/3 going  from #1 to light, then another 14/3 to #2 switch. the #2 switch only has the one 14/3 wire. HELP!

Answer
matt

Someone wired this switch wrong, what you need to do is this.

1 Take the incoming wire blk & wh, the blk goes on a screw that is a different color than the other 2 screws. The white wire gets hooked up to the white wire that comes from the light.
2 Now take the black wire from the light and connect that to the black wire from the 3 wire.
3 Take the 2 wires left over and put them around the last 2 screws,it doesn't matter which one.
4 Now go the the next switch and make sure the incoming black goes on the screw that is difference color (darker maybe) now take the last 2 wires and hook them up to the last 2 screws again it doesn't matter which one.
