Electrical Wiring in the Home - Electrical outlets reading open ground

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 7/3/2009

Question
ok I have 6 outlets in my room that are reading open ground I have went and checked all the outlets and they all have a ground wire. I have also checked the light switch and found no ground I have installed a ground there and all the outlets are still reading open ground.  My house was built in 2005 and this is the only room this is doing this in.  HELP i dont know what else to do

Answer
Hi.

Somewhere the ground wire is not making contact. It may not be easy to find.  But there has to be a continuous path from the breaker box to every outlet and device on the circuit.  However, the problem could be at an outlet that is showing a good ground, because it could be the wire going to the next device that became disconnected. Check the light and switch boxes too, because the grounds have to pass through there. Look for loose bare wires.

I hope this helps.

Bob
