Electrical Wiring in the Home - Missing Electric Heaters in Older FL Home

Expert: Greg Hughes - 7/4/2009

Question
A friend just bought a 1962 house in Florida.  No central heat or cooling.  There are thermostat/controllers for heat (Emerson mostly) in every room - they have power to them but there do not seem to be any heaters anywhere.  We are mystified.  Cannot see where electric baseboard or wall heaters might have been removed.  Any hints as to what might be going on here? If someone removed the heaters why not the controllers too?  What are we missing?

Answer
Check the ceilings. You probably have radiant ceiling heat. It was very popular for awhile.

Because heat rises it makes no sense to me why the builders thought it was a good idea to put heaters in the ceiling.

I suggest you hire an electrician or HVAC tech to check out your system and to offer better solutions.

A lot of people have changed out that style for baseboard because you want the heat down at the living area.

Hope that helps.
