Electrical Wiring in the Home - electrical outlet

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 7/1/2009

Question
this is what I have done. I cut a preexisting 120 volt line and ran it into a junction box where I ran a new line to a new outlet. My problem is I keep blowing the breaker. When I cut the existing line I ran both ends into the box and connected all the white wires together and then all the black wires together and then the ground wires together. Is this wrong.

Answer
Hi.

It is correct if it is a regular line.

Do you know exactly where the wire goes to?  If not, it could be a switch loop or other place where you shouldn't splice.

Most likely something is touching that shouldn't be. perhaps a ground wire is touching a screw.  Did you check both the splice box and the outlet box?  Look for burn marks for a short.

I hope this helps.

Bob
