Electrical Wiring in the Home - installing a new outlet

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 7/2/2009

Question
I am replacing the outlets in my bedroom from the 1960's....there are 3 outlets and a switch that controls the ceiling fan/light (not a dimmer)that are all on the same circuit. The first outlet was fine. The second one has 6 wires (3 black/ 3 white) and a ground. Unfortunately, I didn't know this until I had removed the old outlet (which fell apart in my hand). I have no idea where the extra wires are supposed to go! The other outlet only had four wire and a ground....

Answer
Hi.

It depends on where the wires go to.

If they all go to other outlets, then all the whites would connect together plus to the silver colored screw.  The blacks would connect together and to the dark screw.

If there is a switch, and turning it on trips the breaker, then one of the wires is a switch loop.  You would have to find which wire.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any follow up questions.

Bob
