Electrical Wiring in the Home/Home Wiring

QUESTION: My mother uses an infrared heater in her home occasionally and it works very well.  Recently, I borrowed it to use at my house in my bedroom.   I could easily tell that it was not generating the same amount of heat output at my house that it did at my motherís.  Is this a common problem?

ANSWER: Hi Mark,

This is not normal. I think the power company could be supplying you with slightly difference voltages. You mother could have higher then normal voltage. You could have lower then normal voltage. Only way to know is with a voltage tester.

Is this something that can be performed with a Digital Multimeter.  If so, can you give me some idea how to go about doing this?

Thank you very much for passing along your knowledge.  I greatly appreciate it.

All you can do is take a meter reading. In the us our voltage should be 120v  +or-  5%. You can buy a meter that also test the line under a 15 or 20 amp load.  It may be an issue with bad connections. You would need an electrician to fix that. It could be good to have done. Bad connections can be a fire hazard.
