|Comment||Thanks for your reply but I wonder if maybe the power was brought to the fan/lights first - then run to the switch like was done sometimes in the old days of wiring - it seems that would produce electrical detection at the device with the switch OFF since the power source would be in the light / fan box. This is why voltage is detected at the switch itself when it is in the OFF position. I am no expert of course that is why I asked the question, but I like to be thorough about all of the possibilities and perhaps my own misunderstanding of what seems logical to me and proceed safely and correctly.
