# Electrical Wiring in the Home/Phantom voltage

Question
I need to change a switch.  I flipped the breaker off.  I tested the line for current and found voltage.  But there isn't enough power to light the light.  Is it safe to work in the J-box as long as the breaker is off???

Ted, that was too kind and not necessary, I am a volunteer,  and you have common sense to boot, which makes it much easier to help,   but thank you so much,  that was very kind and I do appreciate it,  please remembier if you need any further help figuring out if your breaker is maybe not opening,  carbon tracked or you are getting voltage down the neutral line, let me know, there IS an answer,   and I will walk you step by step until we find it,  so please if you need anything double checked or otherwise let me know,    Thank you again   Will

Ted    what amount of voltage?  Measured from where to where?  The breaker should kill the hot, line,   so if it is induced voltage down in the micro volts  maybe it is normal    but I would be careful,   real careful,     if you could describe the testing you did in more detail it would be helpful to help me help you

Think about it   if the hot is open at the breaker  where is the voltage coming from?

We need to figure that out       but I change light switches all the time hot,  just one wire at a time with the others capped off,   not suggesting you do that,    I just want to know where this voltage is coming from     a neutral problem  ???   Some sort of back feed     I absolutely need to know how much voltage is present after the breaker is tripped
