Electrical Wiring in the Home - Running Wire from junction box to ceiling fan

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 6/6/2006

Question
I would like to install a ceiling fan in our bedroom.  I've done this before in other homes when there were existing ceiling fixtures.  This room doesn't have one.  I need to run a wire from a junction box in the attic to the new fixture. I plan on controlling the fan and light by pull chains or remote control.

My questions are:

What size cable should I use?
Should I use a three-wire or four-wire cable?
What should I be careful of when connecting in the junction box?

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi.

Make sure you tap off a general lighting circuit.  Match the wire that is there.  If you are not sure, use 12-2.

You only need two conductors plus the ground, since you will be using the pullchains or a remote.

Just be sure you are using a box made for fans.  It should have all the instructions. The fan will have the wiring instructions.

I hope this helps.  Feel free to ask any follow up questions.

Bob
