Question
Our AC unit is 40amp...the breaker is 40amp..the wire between the two is 30amp...Our builder's AC man says that is code...Our inspector says it's not.
Can you help?

Answer
Hi Deborah,
What is the name plate amperage on the A/C unit They are normally less than 30 A. The code does allow a 40A breaker on 10 gage (30A wire) on some A/C systems where that is what the manufacturer calls for. It should be listed in the paper work or on the name plate for the A/C unit.
