Electrical Wiring in the Home - ceiling switch

Expert: Bob Sponaugle - 5/13/2006

Question
Hi!
I have a ceiling fan with light kit in a bedroom.  The ceiling fan works fine on the switch, but when the light is turned on fi comes on and then dims almost completely immediately or flickers never to full power/brightness.

Where to start, is it the wall switch? or light kit?
Suggestions..........thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi.

Unfortunately, I have never heard of that happening before.  However, my guess is that it is somehow miswired inside the fan, and is somehow connected to the workings of the fan.

You may want to see if you can run a wire from the light kit through the fan directly to the junction box, so that there is no chance of it being interconnected to the fan.  If you can't run the wire though the fan, you may want to temporarily run a wire between the light kit and the junction box to see if it works.  If it does, then you need to check the wiring of the fan, contact the manufacturer for a wiring diagram, or just replace the fan/light.

I don't see how the light kit or the switch could cause that problem.  I assume that it is a straight fan/light hookup with no remote control or other dimmer equipment.  If there is, then that is probably defective.

Feel free to ask any follow up questions.

Bob
