Electrical Wiring in the Home - changing light fitting

Expert: Don Beck - 11/15/2006

Question
I am trying to change a light fitting in my lounge. I tried to wire it up but obviously got it wrong and it blew a fuse which I have now repaired. I made the wires safe with insullation tape as it was getting dark and put the power on only to find that the kitchen light and other light fitting in the lounge doesnt work. Im a bit confused about the wiring as I have 2 cables coming down from the ceiling , one of them has a black wire, a red one and an earth. The other has a black wire and a red one. My new light fitting has a brown wire with connector and a blue wire with connector and a place for the earth to be screwed. Hope you can help me.

Answer
Hi Caron,

We need to know which of these wires is "hot" coming in and which is the switched wire. To find this out, open the wall switch and let me know what colors are in this box, and how they are now connected to the switch or to each other.
