Electrical Wiring in the Home - circuit breaker

Expert: Jeff Evans - 8/21/2005

Question
Never had this problem before, and havent had any electrical work that would have added circuits to a breaker.  Came back from vacation, and have 2 circuit breakers tripping all the time.  One is a 15amp with a yellow "push to test button", the other a 40 amp.  How do I replace them and make sure I get the right ones.

Thanks

Answer
The "Push to Test" is a GFCI breaker.  You will need to turn the MAIN breaker OFF, then remove the wires from the breakers in question, labeling what wire goes where, and take the breakers with you to the store.  To remove the breaker, pull from the center out and it will rotate out.  DO NOT GET NEAR THE INCOMING MAIN BREAKER FEED IT IS STILL HOT.  This may not solve the problem.  Before you replace the breaker I would suggest you attempt to find the cause of the tripping, as you might just be replacing good breakers that are doing there job, with new good breakers that continue the doing the same thing.  Jeff
