Education/Credentials
"The Frank Williams School of Electrical Construction". My dear old boss is 96 and still going God Bless him. I started working for "Tenafly Electric" right out of high school at 19. He was tough but I learned more working for him in 8 and half years than most guys. We did mostly industrial work while doing some commercial and residential so I was fortunate to be exposed to all 3 areas of electrical construction. The guys I worked with were all good guys and I stay in touch with some of them still. Most of us went into our own buisness's which says something about the caliber of the guys I worked with. We had some interesting clients : Wella Corp. of shampoo fame, Farah Fawcett etc, I didn't buy shampoo for 10 years, it was a great place to work. Pan Am the X airline just before they went under, another great place to work, nice clean environment. C&C Metals, the largest button manufacturer in the US, a not so clean environment but a very interesting place to work, lots of machine's cranking out buttons of all kinds but you had to be on your toes, it was a potentially dangerous place to be . All kinds of action going on around you.

Electrical Wiring in the Home - converting elctric cooktop to gas

Expert: PASCACK VALLEY ELECTRIC Bob Mossman - 4/25/2004

Question
We are replacing our electric cooktop with a gas unit. the gas unit requires only a 110 outlet to plug into. However, the electric cooktop has double poled ( two breakers at panel) 220 volt supply that was hard wired to the electric cooktop.

I have two options I can think of for supplying power to the gas cooktop:

1) convert the 220 source to 100. I need your help to know if this can be done, and if so, How do I do it?

2) This is an island cooktop, there is an existing 110 outlet that is wired from inside the island cabinet and I can easily tap into that to create an interior plug for the new cooktop, or hard wire the new cooktop into that circuit.

If I go with option 2 I would have the 220 circuit available for use in my garage where I have a workshop and possibly will need that. How do I secure this wire under teh existing island?

What is your advice?

Answer
TJ,

Absoulely tap into the outlet on the island for the electronic ignition in your new gas cook top. This is your best and EASIEST way to go about it. As far as using the old 220 line for your shop, is it a 3 wire cable or a 2 wire cable ?.  In other words does the cable have a black white and bare ground VS black, red, white bare ground........
