Electrical Wiring in the Home/copper vs aluminum
Expert: Rick Miell - 6/24/2006
QuestionWhat is the difference or reasons between using copper vs aluminum wire? I am wanting to run an 220 volt extension in 2inch conduit from my house to my barn aprox 200ft away. Aluminum is about 1/3 the cost. Can I use it? Thanks Curt Davidson
AnswerHi Curt.
Cost is the main reason for using one over the other. Both are allowed by code, and work well, if the ends of the wire are treated correctly. You need to make sure that where you land the wires are approved for aluminum, if using aluminum. Most terminals and lugs are approved for both copper and aluminum, nowdays.
I hope this has helped.
